Rat 12 Ta 5 Bengali Movie 52 is Ratu, the director of Rat 11. It tells the story of a young boy's journey to becoming a teenager. Told in an intimate outdoor drama, this film is primarily set during the monsoon season in Bangladesh. Ratu primarily draws on Bengali folklore and traditional storytelling techniques to create an engaging narrative that resonates with the idea that every child must go through adolescence before they’re fully mature. It is primarily based on his own life, as he wanted to learn more about what it might take for him to become "the best filmmaker" he could be by making this movie about his journey towards adulthood. As a child, Ratu travelled the world with his parents while he was still in school. He studied at Oxford, while living in Tokyo. After coming back to Bangladesh, he worked for three years while teaching high school in Japan. He has lived in Los Angeles for almost five years now, where he’s still figuring out what being an adult means to him. "I haven’t yet found my way," says Ratu when discussing how adulthood shapes his identity. "But I’m learning it everyday." "This film did not go through the fine-tuning process of Hollywood editing departments saying “cut this, cut that...clarify this...embellish that.. tweak this...twist that.." Ratu channeled the ideas of independence, curiosity and belongingness into his script, his camera, and the performances he captured. Ratu said this about the process: "We shot on 16mm film stock. That was very liberating; I didn’t need to compromise—I could give my actors exactly what they needed to do." Pixar has used 16mm film in their films like Toy Story 3 and Wall-E. Ratu says he enjoys working with film because it's tactile; it's something you can touch. Although the film was made in Bangladesh, it's not your typical lighthearted Bangla comedy film. There are no political jabs, there are no references to rickshaw wallahs, and no husband-and-wife bickering either. Ratu admits that his film is a departure from some of the commercial work he’s done in the past. “There were a lot of things that I needed to get over to do this," Ratu says about making Rat 12 Ta 5. "I had to get over some of my ideas about what a good movie is and what I had hoped would resonate with people." Rat 12 Ta 5 is primarily set during the monsoon season in Bangladesh.
